Supporting Autistic and Neurodivergent Children with Natural Language Acquisition

Ali Battye is a Speech and Language Therapist with 25 years of experience supporting autistic and neurodivergent children and the author of three previous books for Allied Health Professionals. She provides training and attends speaking events to further awareness of Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) and language development for autistic and neurodivergent children.

The book opens with an introduction to Gestalt Language Processing, with the author pointing out that it is ‘arguably the biggest thing to happen in the world of Speech and Language Therapy in the last twenty years’. She also establishes that she is still learning about this approach and that the book represents a snapshot in time, rather than a static manual of steps to take. GLP is associated with autism but is not exclusive to autism and it may be associated with other neurodivergences such as ADHD, dyspraxia and dyslexia.

There are fifteen chapters and a section of support resources and templates. The chapters break down complex content into accessible formats and include case studies and practical support for working with parents.

The author has created a resource that links theory and practice and would be of great value to therapists, parents and teachers looking to further their knowledge in this field.
