A Visual Guide to Brain Development, Play and Brain Growth

The author is Director of Tomorrow’s Child and Senior Lecturer at Middlesex University. She is recognised as an international expert in the field of child development and has experience as a BBC education editor, headteacher and  author. She also works in children’s TV production.

The starting point of this book is the focus on the child’s developmental stage, which  then examines how play impacts on brain and body growth and addresses further play opportunities.

QR codes are used to link to bite-sized films on a companion website that set the scene for deeper discussions, alongside complex pedagogy that is explained in everyday language.

The book is full of colour photographs and images that complement the text and provide further information to engage the reader. Pointers for digging deeper, discussion starters and reflection points are also key in developing a greater understanding of the content.

Information is also included in relation to inclusion, with a chapter  relating to the characteristics of learning differences and disabilities  such as ADHD, Down’s Syndrome and Cystic Fibrosis.

This is an attractive and authoritative overview of play and the significance of its role at the centre of child development.
