Specific Learning Differences: What Teachers Need to Know (2nd Edition)

In this second edition, Diana Hudson shares some of the latest thinking, research and practice in relation to meeting the needs of students with learning differences.

Her own background spans over thirty five years of working in a range of settings, including secondary schools, adult education colleges and at university level.

This is a very well-informed publication that covers a wide range of information about ‘brains that work a little differently’, including:

  • Dyslexia
  • Dyscalculia
  • Dysgraphia
  • Pathological Demand Avoidance
  • Obsessive Compulsive Disorder

Chapters two to eleven each cover a different specific difference, with subsequent chapters providing information about organisational skills, revision and exams.

The author has included a number of appendices that summarise some of the information and ways  to download checklists and sources of further information and support.

She has included short case studies, linked to takeaway ideas, classroom strategies and, for example, visual ways to support learning.

This is a really useful text that is designed to be reader-friendly  and would certainly support all those working in the classroom, from seasoned professionals to those in training.

I will be recommending this in my own international training sessions.
