The author has been a journalist and producer of programmes for Swedish radio and television, as well as writing for a number of media outlets. The book opens with a note from her, where she explains that she is an autist and that her aim is to provide some insights into understanding ‘normal ‘ people better. This includes tips and advice and is ‘an autistic guide, written by an autistic guide’.
This is an interesting read as it ‘flips the script’, describing aspects of the neurotypical profile such as:
- How to spot a neurotypical
- A society built for the brains of the majority
- How neurotypicals experience the world
- Things neurotypicals say and how you can respond
- Understanding others
The book also includes a quiz that asks the reader to answer questions about everyday situations and reactions that are often associated with autism.
Promoted as a ‘playful guide’ , this would be a useful resource or source of discussion. It raises important insights into how autists often struggle to negotiate social situations that are culturally predicated on neurotypical norms. It is fascinating.
