OK, I have to fess up. I had no idea that dogs could be trained to give people with epilepsy early warning of seizures. In her fascinating article on page 47, Tracy Walker describes how this magical canine capability is routinely used to enable people to lead normal lives. Utterly extraordinary.

Dyspraxia features unusually large in this issue. The articles by Rosaline Van de Weyer (page 51) and Emily Lawlor (page 53) provide really useful, practical approaches to managing DCD. On page 34, DCD specialist Paulene Kamps puts forward an intriguing explanation for the ongoing increase in autism diagnoses, suggesting that many cases of high-functioning autism, or what we used to call Aspergers, may more usefully be diagnosed as DCD. And she goes further, suggesting that what Hans Asperger called autistic psychopathy in the 1940s may actually have been DCD.

It’s been a privilege to edit this issue of SEN Magazine. I’ve learned about Anendophasia from Deborah Hayes (page 38) and how some children have no inner monologue. On page 41, Cynthia Hammer strikes a blow for girls with ADHD. We should be identifying girls with ADHD before they’re eight years old—we can do it for boys, so why not for girls?

Turn to page 74 for a preview of what’s on offer at this year’s Tes SEND Show at the Business Design Centre in October.
