Breakthrough moments

We recognise a breakthrough moment when we see one. Gemma Roberson has seen the transformational magic happen.

It’s when we see a light come on behind a young person’s eyes, when they realise that they can achieve something that they never thought they could, no matter how small it might seem to someone else. It’s that transformational magic that happens when they discover their own self-belief. But these moments can require determination, courage and support, and it is vitally important that there are inclusive environments so that every child has this opportunity.

It’s essential that outdoor education plays a part in a child’s development. SEN provision in schools provides a huge array of support for children, but for some children the classroom can be an overstimulating environment. For some, bringing learning outside the classroom can provide a more positive experience than in a classroom setting. Regardless of their abilities, many children go on residential trips with challenges to overcome and new skills to learn, and return with a sense of accomplishment and increased self confidence.

All children should have that opportunity to experience their own individual breakthroughs. We know from Ofsted’s 2023 report into PE provision that adventurous activities should form part of a key offering to pupils, and that sometimes the offering to pupils with SEN isn’t broad enough to allow clear and ambitious end points. Outdoor activities should be in a safe, accessible environment equipped with SEN provisions, adapted to individual needs.

Trained activity specialists know how to safely provide an inclusive experience. Specialist equipment allows young people with physical disabilities to enjoy activities, with accessibility adaptations where required. There should be opportunities to relax and avoid overstimulation. Many outdoor activities can seem daunting at first, but they help children work together to conquer their fears and discover confidence in their own abilities, in their own time.
