A child comes into care every fifteen minutes in the UK, and will probably need a foster family, says Hayley Attew.
There are over a hundred thousand children in care in the UK, and three quarters of them live with foster families. Too often, these children are placed more than twenty miles from home because a foster family cannot be found to look after them nearby. Fostering services across the UK urgently need to recruit thousands more foster families in the next twelve months. Fostering extends far beyond providing a temporary home. It’s a lifeline that offers stability, support, and a chance for a better future to vulnerable children.
Yet, despite its profound importance, the foster care system faces a critical shortage of carers. The process of becoming a foster carer can be seen as daunting, and the emotional and physical demands are significant. However, the rewards are equally substantial. Many foster carers find the experience to be deeply fulfilling, providing a sense of purpose and the joy of making a positive difference in a child’s life.

Children enter the foster care system under some of the most challenging circumstances. They come from environments where safety, stability, and nurturing are often absent. Foster carers provide these children with a safe haven—a place where they can begin to heal from past traumas and start to build a brighter future. The stability of a loving foster home is not just beneficial; it is essential for the emotional and psychological well-being of these young lives. In a stable home, children can access proper nutrition, healthcare, and education, which are fundamental to their physical and mental growth.
Beyond the basics, foster carers offer something invaluable: guidance and life skills. From basic self-care to complex social interactions, the lessons imparted by foster carers prepare children for independence and adulthood. These skills are critical for their future success and integration into society as well-adjusted, contributing members.
Looked-after children with special needs are a uniquely vulnerable group. They often contend with the dual challenges of navigating the emotional turmoil of displacement from their birth families and managing physical, developmental, or learning disabilities. But if you’re already supporting a child with special needs, you have a strong foundation to become a foster carer. The skills you’ve developed—patience, empathy, and adaptability—are invaluable in foster care.

Your experience with creating personalised care plans and therapies can make a significant difference in the lives of foster children. These children often come from challenging backgrounds and require individualised support to thrive. Your ability to understand and respond to unique communication styles is crucial, particularly for foster children with past traumas who may struggle to express themselves. Your skills in building trust and connection can help them feel understood and supported. Your familiarity with navigating healthcare systems, educational resources, and support networks also positions you well to advocate for the needs of foster children. This advocacy is essential in ensuring they receive the proper care and opportunities for growth.
The impact of fostering extends to the wider family as well. By caring for children, foster carers provide birth families with the time and space they need to address underlying issues, such as substance abuse or mental health problems. The ultimate goal is often reunification, where children can return to a safer and more stable home environment with their birth families.
Fostering is not just about providing a roof over a child’s head. It’s about giving them the chance to experience love, stability, and the opportunity to thrive. The empathy and resilience you’ve developed while caring for a child with special needs are exactly what many foster children need. If you can consider fostering, you have the power to change a life. And in doing so, you will find that your own life is enriched in ways you never imagined.
