What develops and what stays the same

The author is a senior scientist who investigates spatial concepts and how this relates to the special needs of children. She currently works as research project lead for inclusive education at the Leibniz Institute for Educational Trajectories and as an associate at the University of Bremen in Germany.

The book is organised into  two parts, covering a wide range of issues, including  the following:

  • Historical theories on movement and visual abilities
  • Recent theories on movement and visual abilities in children
  • Drawing and writing development
  • Motor and visual abilities in Attention Deficit
  • Cognitive functions in children with ASD

This is quite a complex text that combines theory and research, whilst also providing essential knowledge about the foundations of typical and atypical development. The section on the research on playpens, for example,in various countries, is fascinating.

This is a book that provides many insights into how memory, imagery and planning processes are affected by the development of  aspects of non-verbal intelligence.
