There’s quite a bit on SEN policy in this issue. Maybe this is not surprising, in view of the noises the Government’s making about reforming SEN provision in England. On page 45, Chris Lefcovitch argues that, instead of a new round of wholesale reform, we should stick to the original intent of the 2014 reforms. If you’d like to understand the knotty issues around Safety Valve agreements and the statutory override system, turn straight to Rachel Scales’s article on page 43. Still on the theme of SEN policy, but approached from a visual impairment angle, Lucy Proctor (page 66) suggests that the new Curriculum Framework for Visual Impairment (CFVI) could inform a more general model for specialist provision.

Our headline topic of Catching dyslexia early begins on page 13, where Professor Diane Montgomery discusses in practical terms how it’s possible to identify dyslexia in Reception with the aim of remediating it by the end of KS1. In Maria Davies’s article on page 11, she writes about the importance of phonological awareness for establishing a sound reading foundation in the early years.

There are no fewer than seven Point of View articles in this issue, which is probably a world record for SEN Magazine. These are people’s personal opinions and stories. Please have a look.
